The former mayor of Grayslake is now running for a seat on the county board.

Pat Carey announced her candidacy this week for Lake County Board representative in District 11 and will run in the Democratic Primary election Feb. 5, 2008.

The seat is currently held by Terese Douglass who was appointed to fill the vacancy when Sandy Cole (R-62nd of Grayslake) was elected as state representative.

Carey began her political career over two decades ago as a leader of a citizens group that worked to preserve Picket Fence Farms, which has become open space known as the Rollins Savanna Forest Preserve.

She was elected to the Grayslake Village board and served one term as trustee from 1989 to 1993. She was then elected to two terms as mayor from 1993 to 2001.

"I've always enjoyed local government," said Carey, a Grayslake resident for 25 years.
"To be able to affect change on a more regional level is very attractive to me," Carey said. "I understand how a municipality works."

After spending 20 years in the corporate travel industry, Carey moved back into municipal government. She has been overseeing economic development activities for the Village of Arlington Heights.

She has missed involvement in local politics. She said her biggest accomplishments from her years in Grayslake were helping to expand the Metra North Central line, establishing a new train station in Grayslake and prioritizing funding for road projects such as the Atkinson Road improvements.

Carey said traffic congestion relief is one of her key issues.
"If you ask any resident in the county what their three biggest complaints are, the first is most likely traffic, and the other two may be traffic as well," she said.

"There is no magic bullet for traffic relief," Carey said. "We need to look at projects that can get consensus. I've been happy to see the progress on the Route 120 bypass. Look closely with our state representatives in terms of mass transit support, overall Metra improvements and
She said she would bring 12 years municipal experience to the county board.

"I know how to balance budgets and manage large teams of people," said Carey. "I'm really good at bringing people together to get things done. I believe we need to find the projects that we can get done, stop arguing about the ones we can't, and move forward."

Grayslake Mayor Tim Perry supports Carey for the county board.
"As mayor for eight years, she rose to a position of leadership in Lake County and worked closely with county officials on key issues such as improvement to the Countryside Landfill, transportation projects and recycling," Perry said. "Her knowledge and experience will be a tremendous asset as a member of the Lake County Board."
